The Night Sky in Ancient Greece and Rome

In Greece, constellations, or katasterismoi are divided into several categories. One category is the zodiac, or zodiakos. This category consists of twelve constellations, largely made up of semi-divine heroes and creatures, whose paths center upon that of the ecliptic sun's. This zodiac's origins, although not entirely known, are believed to be traced to ancient Babylon and Mesopotamia, and eventually adopted by Greece.
